D&D Campaign One: Scalebreakers - 009

Mists in the forest

After their long journey, the group finally reached the Wildwood, Ran’s old home. Mist, burnt trees, and the smell of damp ash hung in the air. There, they were met by the Half-Orc huntress Mira, who led them to the survivors' camp: a small, improvised refuge for the last members of the once-proud tribe. There, Ran encountered two old companions: Orly, the elderly Tortle sage, and Korrin, a mistrustful Aarakocra who held him responsible for much of what had happened. Amidst conversations and memories of days past, it became clear how deep a rift the loss of the tribal elder, Heskan, Ran's former mentor, had left behind. Without his leadership, those who remained were struggling for their bare survival.

As night fell, an ominous silence descended upon the camp. Then came the attack. Korrin and Orly tended to the camp and shepherded the survivors to safety. Heskan appeared, corrupted, insane, his eyes filled with a serpentine gleam, accompanied by several Yuan-Ti. What had once been a wise leader was now merely a tool of Zehir. The group stood their ground against the assault, and after a brief battle, Heskan and the Yuan-Ti finally fell. The swiftness of the victory made the group suspicious; they sensed that this could not possibly be all Zehir had to offer.

After the battle, Korrin and Livandra joined the group. The latter tipped Ran off that the ritual would, in all likelihood, be performed in the abandoned chapel deep within the Wildwood. With this warning and a blessing from the Wildmother, the group prepared for the impending ritual. Korrin swore to join them to end what Heskan had started. In the silence following the storm, they laid down to rest, knowing that the coming day could change everything.
